Special Presentations On Childrens Exposure to Violence

On 4/16/7, Terry Mason, M.D., Commissioner of the Chicago Department of Public Health, convened a cadre a local government officials and executive staff to begin a process of rethinking the public health approach to physical and mental health issues. The conference was titled “Toward A Healthy Future: A Public Health Paradigm for Physical and Mental Health” and was held in Chicago, Illinois.

The audience heard key presentations from Drs. Vincent Felitti, David Satcher, Carl Bell, and William Beardslee, national experts on health and mental health.

DR. FELITTI’S PRESENTATION:

Vincent J. Felitti is co-Principal Investigator of the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Study, ongoing collaborative research between Kaiser Pemanente and the CDC. Dr. Felitti is Clinical Professor of Medicine, University of California, Fellow, American College of Physicians.

DR. BELL’S PRESENTATION:

Carl Bell, M.D., President/CEO, Community Mental Health Council, Inc., Chicago, IL. Dr. Bell is Principal Investigator for “Using CHAMP to Prevent Youth HIV Risk in a South African Township” and Director of Public & Community Psychiatry, Clinical Professor of Psychiatry & Public Health, and, Co-Director UIC Interdisciplinary Violence Prevention Research Center, University of Illinois at Chicago.

DR. BEARDSLEE’S PRESENTATION:

William R. Beardslee, M.D., Academic Chairman, Department of Psychiatry at Children’s Hospital in Boston and, Gardner Monks Professor of Child Psychiatry at Harvard University. He currently directs the Preventive Intervention Project, an NIMH funded study. He is one of the three Principal Investigators of Family Connections for Early Head Start and Head Start. He is on the Board of the National Mental Health Assn., the Carter Center Task Force on Mental Health, Advisory Board for Families for Depression Awareness and the Advisory Board of the Depression Bipolar Support Alliance.

ANNE PARRY’S PRESENTATION:

Anne Parry, M.S.S., is Director for the Office of Violence Prevention, Chicago Department of Public Health. She is one of the founders of Rainbow House, a domestic violence service agency in Chicago, and a leader in the Chicago Safe Start project since its inception. She is developer of the violence prevention campaign – “Take Ten! Talk it Out! Walk it Out! Wait it Out!” and was named one of Today’s Chicago Woman’s 100 Women Making a Difference.”
