at the crosswalk, traffic light, or where there is a special school crossing.

Obey the directions
of the school crossing guard.

Stay alert
when near a stranger.
Ø
Never get into
a vehicle with a stranger.
Ø
Use the buddy
system when walking to and from school
Ø
Avoid vacant
lots and buildings or other places where there aren’t many people around.
Ø
Never touch
needles or other objects associated with drugs.
Ø
Avoid touching
stray animals.
Ø
Report animal
bites to an adult immediately.
Teach
your child to:
Ø
Remain at the
curb while waiting for the school bus.
Ø
Be alert when
approaching the bus.
Ø
Never run in
front of a school bus.
Ø
Obey the school
bus rules.
Ø
Use his/her
seat belt while riding the school bus.
Ø
Stay out of
the bus danger zone (10 feet in front of the bus and 6 feet to the left and
right).
Ø
Never walk
behind a school bus.
If
you drive your child to school:

Wear safety
belts. It’s the law in Illinois.
Ø
Drop off and
pick up your child only in safe and designated areas.
Ø
Have your child
exit and enter the car on the sidewalk side of school.
